Seneca County Commissioners remember George H.W. Bush
All flags in the county to remain at half-staff for 30 days
[Tiffin, OH Dec. 3, 2018] – U.S., state and county flags are to fly at half-staff for 30 days to honor the life of former president George H.W. Bush, who died Saturday.
President Donald Trump issued the order over the weekend. The lowering of flags is a symbol of mourning.
Commissioner Shayne Thomas remembered the 41st president fondly.
“Our country lost a true statesman and public servant,” he said. “He set the bar for service to his country.”
Thomas wasn’t the only commissioner to offer positive comments about Bush Monday.
Commissioner Mike Kerschner marveled at Bush’s love for the country.
He said he was impressed with Bush’s demeanor after being defeated in a hotly contested re-election run against Bill Clinton.
“He went back to the ranch, hoped for the best for the country, but wasn’t involved,” Kerschner said. “He was concerned more about the future of the country than he was for himself or his legacy.”
Kerschner said Bush and Clinton became congenial with each other in later years, raising money together for important causes.
“It speaks to his legacy that he wanted what was best for his country and not for himself,” he said.
Commissioner Holly Stacy agreed with her fellow board members, remembering Bush as a “true public servant” who exemplified what it means to live a life of service.
“It’s important that we remember him for his dedication to our country in the many aspects that he has touched us all,” she said.
Bush, who was 94, served two terms as vice president under Ronald Reagan before becoming president in 1989, capping off a career that also included time as director of the CIA and U.S. Ambassador to China and the UN in the 1970s.
Bush, who had Parkinson’s Disease, was in and out of hospitals several times in recent years. Bush’s wife, Barbara, died in April.
Bush was a military veteran, serving as one of the youngest pilots in the Navy during World War II.
All American flags in the county are to remain at half-staff for 30 days from the date of Bush’s death.
