QUALIFICATIONS:  An example of acceptable qualifications:

High School diploma or equivalent, and any combination of education, training, and/or experience necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess a State of Ohio Driver’s License, must maintain insurability under the County’s vehicle insurance policy, must be certified by the State of Ohio as an Advanced EMT

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:  The following are examples only and are not intended to be all inclusive.

Computer, telephone, copy machine, fax machine, ambulance and other emergency vehicles, emergency medical equipment, I.V. controller, cardiac monitor/defibrillator, hand tools, two-way radio, etc.

INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:

The employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); works in the vicinity of floor or wall openings, elevated platforms, and/or runways; ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds; works in an area in which means of egress is or can be obstructed; works on and around powered platforms and/or vehicle mounted platforms; is exposed to environmental conditions which may result in injury from fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poorly ventilated work areas; exposed to possible injury from extremely noisy conditions above 85db; exposed to possible injury from radiation, hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, air contaminants, hazardous waste, unclean or unsanitary conditions; has exposure to human blood or other bodily fluids; exposed to possible injury from explosions and/or falling from high places; has exposure to extreme non‑weather related heat or cold ; has exposure to second-hand smoke; works in or around crowds; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons or life threatening situations; has exposure to hot cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions; occasionally lifts objects 200 lbs or less; occasionally carries objects 200 lbs or less; occasionally pushes objects 200 lbs or less; occasionally pulls objects 200 lbs or less.

Note:  In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this is considered very heavy work.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND WORKER CHARACTERISTICS:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:  For purposes of 42 USC 12101:

(1)  Under direction of the EMS Director, oversees and carries out all needed pre‑hospital patient care up to the E.M.T. Advanced level, as required; determines nature and extent of illness or injury, establishes priority for emergency and renders rescue and emergency care to include life support or intensive care techniques (e.g., opening and maintaining airway, giving positive pressure ventilation, cardiac resuscitation, controlling of hemorrhage, treatment of shock, immobilization of fractures, bandaging, assisting in childbirth, management of mentally disturbed patients, and initial care of poison and burn patients; where patients must in emergency be extricated from entrapment, assesses extent of injury and gives all possible emergency care and protection; provides light rescue service if ambulance has not been accompanied by specialized unit; after extrication, provides additional care in sorting of injured in accordance with standard emergency procedures; in conjunction with cooperating licensed medical doctor, doctor of osteopathic medicine and surgery, or physician advisory board, performs cardiac monitoring, defibrillation, airway or gastric intubation, relief of pneumothorax or administration of appropriate drugs and intravenous fluids as necessary); senior Advanced EMT at scene assumes command of emergency operations, including command firefighter first responders, EMT’s and Advanced EMT’s.

(2)  Completes and files standardized reports of patient information and care for the use of receiving hospital and administration, including nature of request for aid, pertinent past history, therapy provided, diagnosis, disposition, and sufficient patient information for billing purposes; and maintains effective communication with physician on duty at hospital to relate patient condition and obtain orders for treatment when needed.
