Local youth invited to learn more about 4-H

When Ava Lucius of Tiffin was nine years old, she flipped through a 4-H project book until a cake decorating page caught her eye. By the end of the project, she had gained the foundations of a skill that, three years later, she transformed into a business, Ava Cakes. Since that time, Lucius has been hired to create seven custom wedding cakes, over 50 special occasion cakes and over 2,000 cupcakes.
Lucius served as the 2022 Seneca County Jr. Fair Queen and is now an 18-year-old Heidelberg University student. She said 4-H taught her more than how to decorate a cake.
“4-H gave me a lot of life skills that I would not have otherwise learned, and those skills helped me build a business,” she said. “I learned electrical, cooking, teamwork, leadership and many other skills.”
Next month, local families will have the opportunity to learn more about the impact 4-H can have on their children. Seneca County 4-H will host an Open House at Sentinel Career and Technology Center on Sunday, Feb. 11 from 4-5 p.m. Sentinel is located at 793 E. Twp. Rd. 201 in Tiffin.
The event is open to any youth age 5 to 18 who is interested in learning more about joining 4-H. Current 4-H members can learn about new opportunities and project ideas. Attendees can meet with 4-H advisors, learn about local 4-H clubs, view project books, see sample projects and win door prizes.
