Sheriff Fredrick Stevens visits Old Fort Elementary

Seneca County Sheriff Fredrick Stevens helps Old Fort First Graders celebrate reading

Old Fort Elementary School is celebrating National Read Across America Day with a week full of activities. The event, which was created by the National Education Association, celebrates the March 2 birthday of Dr. Seuss. On March 4, Old Fort first graders learned about future careers as they dressed up as doctors, teachers and veterinarians.

The best part of the day was a visit by Seneca County Sheriff Fredrick Stevens, who helped them dream about their futures as he read Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” First grade teachers Erica Seigley, Sarah Swanagan and Nichole Lamale invited Stevens to read to their students.

“Sheriff Stevens talked about his profession and what he does,” Seigley said. “The kids got to ask questions, and a lot of kids told him they want to be him when they grow up.”

Seigley is grateful the sheriff took the time to visit the school.

“It went fantastic. The kids really enjoyed it. He’s a great reader,” Seigley said. “Sheriff Stevens is a really nice guy and has done a lot for the community.”

Visiting the school gave Stevens the opportunity to make a personal connection with local children and school staff.

“I truly believe in community engagement at every level. It is book readings, parades, community meetings, job fairs, etc., that allow the Sheriff’s Office to be seen as ‘regular people’ just like the citizens we represent,” Stevens said. “I enjoy being the top cheerleader and promoter of our office and letting the community know the hard work that goes on 24/7 by the hardworking men and women of the Sheriff’s Office.”

On top of that, the sheriff simply had fun.

“What a perfect way to start a week off by reading to the first graders at Old Fort Elementary,” he said. “How can you not come away smiling?”
