Dog license deadline looming

Purchase dog licenses by Jan. 31

Seneca County Auditor Julie Adkins reminds dog owners that the deadline to purchase dog licenses is Wednesday, Jan. 31.  Dog licenses can be purchased at the Seneca County Auditor’s Office at 109 S Washington St., Suite 2206 in Tiffin on Monday through Friday at 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Dog licenses can also be purchased online at www.senecacountyauditor.org.

Licenses for kennels may only be purchased at the Seneca County Auditor’s Office. A “dog kennel” or “kennel” means an establishment that keeps, houses and maintains adult dogs for the purpose of breeding the dogs for a fee or other consideration received through a sale, exchange or lease, and that is not a high-volume breeder licensed under chapter 956 of the Ohio Revised Code. Purchasers of a kennel license may be subject to inspection by the Seneca County Dog Warden. The fee for kennel licenses is $75.00.  Kennel owners will now be required to sign additional paperwork.

Dog owners have the option of purchasing either one-year, three-year or permanent licenses. Fees for licenses are $15 for one-year, $45 for three-year, and $150 for permanent licenses.  Multi-year licenses can only be purchased at the Auditor’s Office.  Owners should be aware that the three-year and permanent licenses are not refundable in the event of the animal’s death or if the dog is transferred to a new owner.

Licensing your dog is required by state law and may ensure that your pet will be returned if it becomes lost.

The Auditor’s Office often receives inquiries following the deadline requesting a waiver from late fees for various reasons. The Auditor’s Office does not have the authority to waive late fees for any licenses purchased after the deadline. Purchase a license today to avoid a penalty later.
