Tiffin University broke ground on the Center for Innovation and Learning on May 3.

It can be said that universities are the wombs that carry dreams. On May 3, a long-held dream was birthed at Tiffin University (TU) as staff, students and community members gathered for the groundbreaking of the Center for Innovation and Learning. Retired TU Assistant VP Robert Watson returned to the school to help celebrate TU’s new era of academia.

Retired TU Assistant VP Robert Watson, left, talks with Seneca County Commissioner Bill Frankart about his excitement over the university’s future Center for Innovation and Learning.

“When I was here, I wanted to do this for several years,” Watson said. “They got the funding for it, and it thrills me to see this.”

For many years, overflow classes have been taught in rooms at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. When the Center for Innovation and Learning opens in fall, 2025, it will provide 14 modern classrooms, a conference center and office space.

“Our students deserve a beautiful building to learn in, and we’re excited to offer that to them,” said Director of Alumni Relations Vickie Wilkins.

Mitchell Blonde, TU’s VP for Institutional Advancement and Public Affairs, introduced the many dignitaries who attended the event, including State Senator Bill Reineke; State Rep. Gary Click; Seneca County Commissioners Anthony Paradiso, Bill Frankart and Tyler Shuff; City of Tiffin Administrator Nick Dutro; and David Wirt, District Director for Congressman Bob Latta.

Among the crowd that gathered for the groundbreaking of TU’s Center for Innovation and Learning were Seneca County Commissioner Tyler Shuff, Seneca County Commissioner Bill Frankart and State Senator Bill Reineke.

“I’m looking forward to this new facility to enhance the academic opportunities in our community for graduates who want to stay and grow here,” Frankart said.

Blonde was grateful that the university’s longtime dream had come to fruition.

“This building will provide 21st century innovation and learning space that is wholly our own,” Blonde said.

TU President Dr. Lillian Schumacher stands with TU student, Danielle Davis, who spoke at the groundbreaking about the impact the new building will have on education at the university.

Many partners collaborated to make the dream a reality.

“Today, in large part, is a celebration of generosity,” Blonde said.

TU President Dr. Lillian Schumacher said the new building will be unique to the campus.

“It will provide high-tech and adaptive opportunities for students to think, develop, create and make,” Schumacher said.

The new building will also bring a new method of learning to TU. Within its walls, students will engage in project-based learning.

“Students will become cocreators of their learning,” said TU Provost and Chief Operating Officer Dr. Peter Holbrook.

TU student Danielle Davis called the Center for Innovation and Learning a future hub of learning, innovation and inspiration.

Seneca Regional Chamber of Commerce staff and ambassadors joined Tiffin University staff in celebrating the groundbreaking of the university’s newest building.

“Together, we’re not just building a building; we’re building the future of Tiffin University,” Davis said.

State Rep. Gary Click presented a proclamation to TU President Dr. Lillian Schumacher.
