Women in business spotlight: Taylor (Elchert) Harrison

Describe your business:
I own a full-service photography studio that focuses on newborn, child and family portraiture. I offer my clients a unique experience from start to finish that results in beautiful custom artwork for their walls and home. My goal is to provide my families with heirloom quality artwork and cultivate life-long relationships with each client.

How did you get started?
I have always had a love for photography. I began my business quite young – I was only 15! I began by dabbling in all sorts of photography until I discovered that my true passion was with babies, children and family. I was lucky enough to have the guidance and wisdom from my dad when it comes to running a business. He was extremely helpful in making sure that I began my business in the right way.
What is the hardest thing you’ve encountered?
Being in business for 10 years, I have experienced a lot of ups and downs. The most challenging aspect of my journey happened more towards the beginning. There were many people who held influential positions in my life – such as teachers, professors, and academic advisors – who told me outright that I was going to fail as an artist/businesswoman. These were people who were supposed to have my best interest at heart and they could not give my dream a fair chance. It was difficult for me to overcome their opinions, but I am so thankful that I did. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I chose to take their advice.

What advice would you offer to other women who might be interested in starting a new business?
4.) The advice that I would offer to women who are considering starting a new business is simple: GO FOR IT! If there is something that you are passionate about, you should absolutely pursue it. There are so many helpful resources to assist you in getting started. You are capable of following your dreams and achieving those goals. Do it!
