Seneca County Board of Elections Educates Public on New Voter ID Laws in Ohio

[Tiffin, OH – March 21, 2023] – As the May Primary Election approaches, the Seneca County Board of Elections wants to ensure that voters are aware of the new voter identification requirements in Ohio. Voters will be required to provide valid photo identification to cast their ballot.

Acceptable Forms of ID:
There are several acceptable forms of photo identification that voters can use to cast their ballot, including:

• Ohio driver’s license;
• State of Ohio ID card;
• Interim ID form issued by the Ohio BMV;
• A US passport;
• A US passport card;
• US military ID card;
• Ohio National Guard ID card; or
• US Department of Veterans Affairs ID card.

All photo IDs must have an expiration date that has not passed, a photograph of the voter, and the voter’s name, which must substantially conform to the name on the Poll List or Poll Book.

An unexpired Ohio Driver’s License, State ID Card or Interim Documentation with the former address is also an acceptable form of ID when the current address is in the poll book. If the voter changed their name and provides proof of the legal name change, completes and signs Form 10-L, and is registered within the precinct, the voter’s name on the photo ID may be different from the voter’s reported change of name.

Unacceptable Forms of ID:
Ohio law prohibits acceptance of the following forms of ID:

• Driver’s license or photo identification card issued by a state other than Ohio;
• Social Security card;
• Birth certificate;
• Insurance card;
• Utility bill;
• Bank statement;
• Government check;
• Paycheck;
• Other government documents; or
• Any registration acknowledgment notice from the county board of elections.

Provisional Ballots:
If a voter does not have any of the acceptable forms of photo ID, they can still cast a provisional ballot. However, to count the ballot, the voter must provide a qualifying form of identification no later than four days following Election Day.
